It's still not bad. I kinda like it! I'm surprised the team didn't make such a bad game at least.. This game is super fun. It's a retro-style platformer that definitely feels like it belongs right there alongside some of the older classics. The graphics are solid and beautifully layered, and don't feel repetitive or lazy. There are various biomes with their own unique looks. The music is great too, and adds to the macabre fantasy atmosphere. Had no issues with the controls. Sure, they feel a bit tight, but also typical of the genre. If you're going to remember the "good ol' times", then you should probably expect the controls to reflect said times. Just sayin'.If you're a Metroidvania fan, I highly recommend adding this to your collection.I was going to close my review out with a skeleton pun, but I didn't have the guts for it.ba-dum-tss. I loved this game. I got 30 other games the same day; this was the first I tried and it was the only one I played the entire day. The combat is fun and It has great power up progression. The boss battles are engaging and varied. This is a true Metroid style game. Thankfully you don't need to do any bomb jumping but you do turn into a spider instead of a morph-ball. I beat the game in 9 hours and some change at 91% completion. This game was just fantastic.. POST FINISH UDPATE:I have to switch negative.While I was pleasantly surprised at the end of the game to discover that there is a castlevania "true ending" option that isn't otherwise immediately obvious, I was completely let down by the fact that there are no real hints as to where to go for it. You're given a basic tool to support the search, but it's a brute force search over the entire map, at slow, boring navigation speeds, which is just terrible.Symphony of the Night: Hmm, you can't access this area, maybe there's a secret?After Death: Hmm, you already explored 100% of the map, maybe you should now do it again?ORIGINAL:This is a soft recommend, because I don't think the game is necessarily good, but it doesn't do anything to annoy me, for the most part.It's an okay metroidvania, mostly just lacking movement tech, and there don't appear to be any secrets.The animations are a bit stilted in a lot of cases, and the art a little flat in colors.But, it's consistent, and the bosses are generally imaginative and fun (if easy), and I think that consistency across the entire game experience, without it being necessarily bad anywhere, put me on the "pro" vs" con" side of the binary. I'd be neutral on this, but if I have to pick.. Really good hidden gem, recommended for fans of other metroidvania titles. Early exploration can get tedious but it grows on you fairly quickly. Best experienced in short bursts, as the areas are fairly compact, and having a predictable formula of finding a new area, stumbling around until you find the map/save room/teleporter, then making a beeline to the boss, killing it, and finding a new upgrade that lets you reach a new area. If you're a huge fan of metroidvanias like me it does nothing new, but once the second half of the game kicks in and you start getting more and more OP it becomes extremely satisfying to just whoop the♥♥♥♥♥♥out of everything at a faster and faster pace until the end. The only big complaint I have is that 1) you don't get the dash upgrade early enough and 2) you can't carry dash momentum into a jump. I know Masahiro Sakurai won't listen to my complaints on that but the devs of this game probably would.The story, dare I say it, is barebones as expected. Every time it presented some new kind of cliche brought out by exposition from one of the 3 or 4 spirit thingies I rolled my eyes again. Everything's a bit too obtuse to care and I'm really sick of the whole "yeah I'll tell you this thing right now but I can't tell you everything because I don't feel like it lol" thing a lot of games seem to do, but at least there's a speedrun mode that lets you skip cutscenes.But really though, the star of this game is it's amazing soundtrack. It turns what would be a completely forgettable 7/10 game into an 8 or a 9 in my eyes. I've been jamming out to it for the last week.My bottom line: It's a great metroidvania for those who like the genre but there isn't really much unique about it. It's really fun but not a masterpiece. Buy it in bulk with a bunch of other platformers you like, forget about it, then rediscover it in your library and be amazed for a couple afternoons. Crossing my fingers for a sequel.. Completed this impressive game in 11 hours (80%). Design is amazing, art reminds me good old days on my SNES (there is a CRT filter). And the music is just perfect.
